Exercise 120
Philip got out of bed and stretched. He remarked to his brother Peter that it was going to be a lovely sunny day. Peter groaned and begged Philip just to let him sleep a bit longer. He suggested that since Philip was feeling so lively, that he should go along to the gym and burn off some energy. Philip greeted his mother as he arrived in the kitchen, and asked what he could have for breakfast. She replied that there were eggs and bacon in the fridge and muesli in the cardboard, and told him to help himself. He thanked her and asked where his gym kit was. She remarked that it was no doubt where he had left it after using it last.

Nutrients (2)

Surface area is not the same as area.
Smaller particles have a larger surface area.

Tongue:
  • Has taste to help select food
  • Rolls food into bolus, which makes it easier to swallow

Saliva:

  • Secreted by salivary glands
  • Contains muscin which softens food
  • Contains salivary amylase

Starch->by salivary amylase->Maltose

Oesophagus

Struture:

  • Long, narrow, muscular tube
  • The oesophagus walls secretes a liquid called mucus which lubricates food so it moves easily along the gut

Function:

  • Transport food from mouth to stomach

How does oseophagus transport food?

Peristalsis. A rhythmic wave-like contractions of the walls to move food along the gut.

Stomach

Structure:

  • Thick muscular and elastic bag
  • Spincter muscles control the flow of food

What stomach contains?

Gastric juice:

  • Hydrochloric acid ( pH=2 ) which activates pepsin and kill germs
  • contains pepsin

Why does starch digestion stops in stomach?

Hydrochloric acid stops the action of salivary amylase

How does the stomach ensure even mixing of food with gastric juice?

Peristalsis. It can also occur in the stomach.

Chyme

The liquefied and partially digested food in the stomach.

Stomach

Function:

  • Receive food from oesophagus
  • Mix food with gastric juice
  • Digest proteins to polypeptides
  • Move chyme to small intestine

Stomach Ulcer is caused by:

  • Excessive production of hydrochloric acid

Erode stomach walls-> Gastric ulcer

  • Worry and stress

Increase the flow of gastric juice into the stomach

Notes from Biology on Nutrient (1)

Nutrient

Reasons for eating
  • Grow new cells and tissues
  • Repair damaged tissues
  • Provide energy
  • Maintain a healthy body

7 classes of food

  • Carbohydrates
  • Proteins
  • Fats
  • Vitamins
  • Mineral salts
  • Water
  • Dietary Fibre

What is carbohydrates?

Carbohydrates provide body cells with an immediate source of energy they need.

Examples: bread, rice, beans, pasta, potatoes ( starch ) ; apples, bananas, grapes, raisins, chocolates and soft drinks ( sugars )

Excess carbohydrates in our body are turned into fats and stored. The fats are used for providing energy only if carbohydrate intake is low.

What are fats?

  • Fats insulate our body against excessive heat loss.
  • Fats are also important sources of energy that can provide twice as much energy as carbohydrates.

Examples: Butter, Margarine, Milk, Cheese, Nuts and fatty parts of meat

What are proteins?

  • Proteins are the main subsatnces used for growth of new cells and the repair of damaged tissues
  • They also provide energy when the body lacks carboydrates and fats

Examples: fish, meat, eggs, milk, yoghurt, cheese and beans

Before the topic of Digestion, there are some digrams you need to draw which I can't show it here.

Digestion

Why is digestion important?

Large molecules cannot pass through cell membrane p align="center">Small molecules can pass through cell membrane

Mouth

Teeth: cut, grind and break food into smaller pieces to increase surface area for enzymes to act on.

Today's lesson ended here.

To be continued.

We were grouped randomly and each member in a group will have to contribute five problems, which makes a total of 15 problems in a group.
